• When do sewer pipes need replacing or repairing?

• What are some common signs that my drains need to be repaired or replaced?

  If you aren't an expert or if your house is showing subtle signs, then it can easily get noticed when your drainage is starting to act up. Common signs of drainage volatility are:

  • Sewage odor: you may notice a foul smell coming up from a clean sink, bathtub or shower.
  • Slow drain: If your drain is emptying slower than usual, this can signify a backup of grease or other signs of decay.
  • Lush grass: Is there a small patch of grass that is abnormally lush or green? Are the plants in this area flourishing? This may mean that there are extra nutrients from the sewage leaking out from the pipes.
• What if I have roots in my drains?

  The number one cause of sewer backups in the GTA is when tree roots have penetrated the clay pipes in the ground. Clay pipes are susceptible to being compromised by roots at the joints, which were held together by cement years ago. Over time, the cement erodes and breaks away. This is generally where the roots penetrate the pipes.

  Once the roots have entered the pipes, they will continue to grow. The drain can be snaked to cut the roots — however, if this is not dealt with in a timely manner, roots can quickly fill the entire pipe.

  In this instance, the drain can still be snaked but over time the roots will grow back, causing no water to pass through.

  The best solution is to locate the roots with a video drain inspection camera and remove the section of clay pipe where the roots have entered and then replace them with PVC pipe.

• What is grease buildup?

  A slow draining kitchen sink can often be caused by grease buildup in the pipe. When fats, oils and grease are washed down the sink or toilet, they enter the plumbing system and cool, hardening and stick to the inside of the drain pipes.

  Over time, the grease will build up and can block the entire pipe — both on the homeowner’s and city property. When grease buildup causes the drain to slow down, the first step is to snake the drain to create a path for the water to escape. If the drain cannot be cleared with the snake, in most instances the pipe will need to be cut out and replaced.

• When will I need to consider drain line replacement?

  Clay pipes can crack and/or shift if they aren't properly supported.

  No pipe is safe from possible wear, especially if they were not installed correctly or maintained properly. Cast iron pipes can corrode and rust and any pipe can break due to the pressure from the inside (water) and outside (ground) the pipe.

• What is the sewer line repair procedure?

  2. Once the work plan is agreed upon, and approved a permit is obtained for the project.
  3. We expose the existing sewer line and replace it with a new one.
  4. Once the work is performed, our engineers and the city representative inspect the work.
  5. The line is back-filled with gravel and the construction site is cleaned.
  6. New concrete is poured and finished with the existing floor.
